Administration Assistant Level 2 restricted to ages 16 to 24
A brand new standard arrives already narrowed to young people.
The Level 2 Administration Assistant standard (ST1472) has been approved with a £4,000 funding band and a 12-month duration, and version 2.0 is approved for delivery from 1 August 2026. Alongside approval, the 2026/27 funding rules introduce an age restriction: apprentices are eligible only if aged 16 to 24 at the start of the apprenticeship.
What it changed from: there was no funded Level 2 entry point in business administration. The Business Administrator standard sits at Level 3, which left a gap for genuine entry-level administrative roles and for learners not ready to start at Level 3.
The age restriction is notable because it applies from the outset rather than being retrofitted, and it fits the wider pattern across the 2026/27 rules of directing funding towards younger apprentices.
On the pathway, this standard now forms the bottom rung of the business and administration route. Above it sit Business Administrator at Level 3 and, until September 2026, Team Leader at Level 3 — though Team Leader is one of the 16 standards losing funding, which removes the natural next step and leaves the route's progression ladder with a gap.
What follows: providers can offer a funded Level 2 administrative programme for the first time, but only to under-25s, so adult career-changers into administration have no funded entry route at Level 2. Employers should map their administrative pipeline against both this restriction and the Team Leader defunding before planning 2026/27 cohorts.
